Dr. Barcelona de Mendoza Reports Back From SGI 2016

August 2, 2016

Dr. Veronica Barcelona de Mendoza, Postdoctoral Associate for InterGEN, recently attended the NINR Summer Genetics Institute (SGI) in June 2016.  SGI is intended to provide nursing graduate students, faculty, and clinicians with an exceptional foundation in molecular genetics to use in their future research, clinical practice and teaching activities.  The intensive 4-week program included both classroom and laboratory components.

Along with a series of pictures from SGI 2016, Dr. Barcelona de Mendoza also commented on her experience at SGI:

“The Summer Genetics Institute (SGI) was a wonderful experience for two main reasons: 1) the opportunity to learn about the latest science and advances in genetics and genomics from leading scientists inside and outside of the NIH, and 2) the chance to network and work with an amazing group of SGI colleagues. During the month-long training institute in Bethesda, MD, I spent a considerable amount of time in the lab learning laboratory techniques related to genetic analysis. In addition to this practical experience, we also benefited from hearing lectures from a wide variety of experts on molecular genetics with an emphasis on clinical and research applications. This experience provided a wonderful foundation for my future research projects and paths of inquiry, providing a deeper understanding of how to apply genomics into the study of women and children’s health. Finally, I developed close relationships with our group of doctoral students, postdocs and professor level nursing colleagues. This amazing network of nurse scientists with expertise in genetics and genomics will be important for my career development as they will no doubt be collaborators and friends for many years to come.”
